Memories are the binding ingredient for the films in this session.
The first film is the UK premiere of Suba Sivakumaran’s I Too Have a Name. Sivakumaran’s debut film, set in Sri Lanka, impresses with its sensitive and atmospheric portrayal of two women whose memories and herstories are brought to light in the face of (another) war.
The second is award-winning filmmaker Jill Daniels’ latest film, The Border Crossing – a highly original, evocative exploration of her memories of violence whilst hitchhiking through the Basque Country 30 years ago. The film melds past and present, fiction and documentary. Along the way we meet two other women and learn that they too have stories of violence in the Basque Country. A spellbinding montage of memories is built up. The film recently won an award at the Athens Ohio Festival, USA.
